Tickets are still available for the following talk:

Speaker – Sally Miller

Tuesday 19 September, 2.00 – 3.00 pm

at The Cinema, Hampshire Record Office, Sussex Street, Winchester SO23 8TH

William Gilpin popularised a taste for picturesque – natural, wild, untamed landscapes in their various forms.  In 1778 he became vicar of Boldre and turned his attention to forest scenery.  In ‘Remarks on Forest Scenery’ he set down ‘rules’ for grouping trees and shrubs and waxed lyrical about ‘withered tops, dead arms, drooping boughs, decaying grandeur’. This was the very antithesis of ‘Capability’ Brown’s stylized and manicured landscapes.  This talk will explore Gilpin’s ideas and influence.

Tickets:     £8.00 in advance £10.00 on the door
