Orchard Close

Orchard Close, based in Hayling Island, provides short term stays for adults with learning disabilities which gives respite to their family and carers.

The gardens were developed in partnership by Hampshire County Council’s Adult Services and Environment departments and the Hampshire Gardens Trust, with funding from the proceeds of the sale of part of the site and from a £15,600 National Lottery grant from the Social, Economic and Environment Development (SEED) programme.

This special sensory garden, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, offers residents and staff a chance to interact with nature.  It boasts an orchard to encourage wildlife, a water feature, a summerhouse, a lawn for activities such as football, a skittles alley and a barbeque area.  Everything is linked together by easily accessible paths.  Everyone can enjoy some part of the garden, including the seating that provides a tranquil place to relax or have a quiet chat.

Care of the garden is provided jointly by a landscape contractor and by volunteers, supported by the Friends of Orchard Close. Volunteers have a chance to learn free gardening tips whilst giving something back to the community. We are grateful to Christianne Strubbe, former HCC Principal Landscape Architect MLI, Landscape Planning and Heritage Group for her continuing enthusiasm, help and guidance in this project.
