The Inigo Jones house was built in 1635 and purchased by the Henderson family in 1920. With remarkable views to the Downs, and a wide range of soils from acid clay to chalk, this place enabled Harry and Sarah Henderson to commission a variety of new schemes, including arboreta, lakes, rose gardens and borders; together with a garden to celebrate the London Olympics and Harry’s 60th birthday! While the intensively planted walled garden was designed as a ‘cutting garden’, it is also massively productive. Head gardener Pete Jackman, who was born and raised in West Woodhay, continues to develop the gardens in his own way. Most recently, as the Hendersons fell in love with Italian gardens on their travels, Pete was inspired by Angel Collins planting scheme for a small Italianate garden that had been designed by Veronica Mackinnon, who also had been influenced by Harold Petos’s Italianate garden at Iford Manor. Harry will give us a tour of the house and talk about its history.
