NEWS FROM THE TRUST CONSERVATION COMMITTEE

The Conservation Committee and the Research Group jointly organised a very successful presentation at Mottisfont Abbey in October 2007 entitled The Designed Landscapes in Hampshire: How the Trust can help you. This event was aimed at local authorities in Hampshire in order to encourage more consultations with the Trust. The meeting was chaired by June Parkinson with presentations by Dr Andy Brown, South East Regional Director, English Heritage; Gilly Drummond, Vice-President of the Trust; Janet and Tony Hurrell, Chairmen respectively of the Research Group and Conservation Committee, and Cllr Roy Perry of Hampshire County Council.

The Conservation Committee has dealt with the few relevant planning applications referred to us and has also given grants to a number of voluntary projects, including the Botley Road Cemetery in Romsey, Priestlands School and towards the restoration of parts of the walled garden at Chawton House Library. The Committee are currently seeking projects to support this year.

RESEARCH GROUP

Research has recently been completed on Ditcham Park near Petersfield (now a school) revealing that previous information about the designer of the house and garden was almost certainly incorrect. The Group continued to concentrate on East Hants District.

At the Annual Training Day in November, we looked at how old photographs and illustrations can reveal changes over the centuries and then pooled information on how we set about our research. The question of referencing was also addressed.

The highly successful Study Day at Dogmersfield in April was featured in the English Heritage publication Heritage Counts 2007, as an example of community involvement by the voluntary sector. Over the next few months the Group will be contributing data on Hampshire sites to the Parks and Gardens Database UK. The web-based Database is expected to go live to the public later in the year.

New members are always very welcome and do remember – no particular expertise is needed. Please contact the Trust Secretary if interested.

EDUCATION....EDUCATION...EDUCATION...

Although this Committee is still without a Chairman, it is as busy as ever under the temporary leadership of June Parkinson. The new Education Awards scheme which was launched last year resulted in several worthwhile projects receiving both financial and practical support from the Committee.

Our Going Green Study Days for 14-16 year old pupils began in October with young people from Harrow Way School in Andover taking part in an arts-based day at the Hillier Gardens. They have been followed by pupils from two further schools who will have now enjoyed either an arts or science-based day. The project will be repeated again this year.

More schools have been the grateful recipients of the child-sized tools which have proven to be an excellent investment for the Trust.

CHILDREN'S HOMES

Minnie Hughes-Onslow and her small team of helpers continue to be busy supporting twelve homes in Hampshire. In the autumn, all of the homes received a grant towards spring planting and during the course of the year they will all be visited by Minnie if required to offer help and advice.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

The Rope Walk Garden in Southampton, after a period of closure, has been relaunched under the leadership of Dee Brown, an intrepid local person who has brought new enthusiasm to this town centre garden created by the Trust.

Rachel Bebb and Mark Rendell have both been involved in supporting this new initiative and in the autumn the Trust made the hard-working Friends' Group an award towards the cost of spring planting.

PROMOTIONS COMMITTEE

This Committee is currently occupied with finalising the details of our 2008 events programme and thinking ahead to 2009, which happens to be a very important one for the Trust. It marks our 25th Anniversary and we have plenty of tempting events in mind to mark the occasion. We are looking hard at our membership recruitment plan too and this year intend to concentrate on the north east of Hampshire. If you have any ideas for events you would like to see on the programme, do let the Secretary know.

Unfortunately it has been necessary to cancel the trip to Herefordshire due to lack of support. We hope that members who did want to attend will accept our apologies for their disappointment.

SITUATIONS VACANT

As ever, we are in urgent need of Committee members to join our Committees, especially the Promotions Committee and Education Committee. Both Committees have interesting and busy roles to fill. If you have time to spare and would like to become involved, contact the Secretary at the office. All our committee work is rewarding and, most importantly, provides both enjoyment, companionship and plenty of job satisfaction. It is possible to arrange for 'taster' sessions when you can sit in on a meeting and decide whether or not it is for you. Please also consider the following key vacancies which are currently available. If you are interested contact the Secretary.

  • TRUST ARCHIVIST
  • A new role to manage the archives of the Trust, including the slide library, and ensure that they are kept up to date. It is envisaged that all of the details will be managed in the future on a database and we would like to hear from anyone who could help us in this important task.

  • PUBLICATIONS EDITOR
  • The Trust produces three publications for members each year: a Spring and Summer Newsheet and a Journal timed to appear in the autumn. The new Editor would join a panel who would support him or her in compiling publications. An important and interesting role in the Trust's management.
