Case Study
St Swithun Wells Catholic Primary School, Chandlers Ford
St Swithun Wells Catholic Primary School contacted the Hampshire Gardens Trust for help in developing their school garden. Members of the Schools Team visited the site and discussed options for creating a stimulating environment for children, both for structured outdoor learning and play time.
The school subsequently submitted a grant application to purchase and install signs and lecterns situated in prime areas within the garden. Originally, it had been hoped to change the information to reflect seasons and topics. However, it proved too difficult to produce high quality boards with the flexibility to change information so it was decided to make them more robust and permanent.
The Schools Team awarded a grant of £500 in October 2010 and the work was completed in the Spring of 2011.
Three laminated lecterns depicting wildlife in the school grounds have been erected on the edge of a path leading into the classrooms and nearby pond.
The first board ‘Bird Watch’ asks ‘Can you spot these birds’ and shows a selection of garden birds. The second illustrates images of pond wildlife to help children identify creatures while pond dipping. The third shows a variety of insects and mini-beasts. They are colourful with clear informative text and are already a great success with the children.
